GLASTONBURY — Coventry won its seventh Class S championship and fifth in the past five years, defeating Morgan in three games, 25-12, 25-17, 25-16, on Saturday.

The Patriots, who finish the season undefeated at 24-0, were led by outside hitter Stephanie Oliver, who had 12 kills, and setter Aleesha Quintana, who had 30 assists. Marina Rose, named the MVP, had seven kills, including the match-winner, and Britney Curtis had 25 digs.

“It’s unreal, because I’ve been part of a state championship team for four years now, but nothing compares to this year,” Curtis said.

Morgan (24-1) never led in any of the three games and tied the score only on three occasions. It began the third game in a 5-0 deficit, with hitting errors accounting for seven of the Patriots’ first 15 points.

“I think they’re a team not known for making mistakes,” Coventry coach Matt Hurlock said. ”I think our block had something to do with it, because they hadn’t seen a block as good as us. It just forces you to do different things.”

Lauren Fitzgerald led the Huskies with nine kills, Stephanie Strucaly had 19 assists and Melissa Bastian had 32 digs.

This was the third consecutive year the two teams met in the state final. Morgan has not won a game from Coventry in a state championship match since defeating the Patriots for the title in 2005.
